In the last couple of posts we learned that magnesium is essential to your cardiovascular system’s energy supply, including your heart and its most energy-demanding part: the left ventricle.

In today’s post, we look at another critical role magnesium plays in your cardiovascular system, which is essential to your immediate survival.
Magnesium & Your Heart’s pH
Today we look at how magnesium protects your heart from becoming too acidic or too alkaline. In other words, we look at how magnesium regulates your cardiovascular system’s pH. (You can find all the scientific literature for this email at iMag library’s heart section.)
Chemical reactions are what keep your body alive. Without them, your lungs cannot take in air, your liver cannot process fuel sources, your brain cannot send signals via your nerves, and your heart cannot pump blood. Enzymes are the molecules that facilitate these vital chemical reactions.
When it comes to the chemical reactions of the cardiovascular system, alkaline phosphatase is a critical enzyme. This is because alkaline phosphatase regulates your cardiovascular system’s pH in a way that prevents it from becoming too acidic or too alkaline.
(There is a current fad that alkalinity is good, acidity is bad, and that we need to make our whole body alkaline. This is simply not true because various bodily regions require different levels of acidity or alkalinity, and either extreme end of the pH spectrum can be harmful. There’s no such thing as alkalizing your entire body because the different parts of your body keep themselves at the specific pH level they need to be, including your heart. If you somehow managed to alkalize your whole body, you would die.)
Again, alkaline phosphatase is one of the key enzymes that keeps your heart’s pH right where it should be. It has been shown that irregularities in this enzyme and the cardiovascular system’s pH are related to:
- The dysfunction of your heart’s ventricles.
- Weakening of the contractions of cardiovascular muscle.
- Cardiovascular mortality/death.
Both magnesium and zinc facilitate this enzyme’s function and regulate its activity.Thus if we don’t have enough magnesium, our heart may dip into magnesium from other body parts to prevent acidification, or it may very gradually suffer damage from pH dysregulation, as well as any of the consequences above.
